10 Aug Learn About Fall Prevention and Recovery
Although September is Fall Prevention Awareness Month, there’s no wrong time of year to remain mindful of this threat to your health and the health of your loved ones. Falls send over 37 million people worldwide to medical facilities in any given year while also accounting for 684,000 deaths, according to the World Health Organization. The more you know about fall risks, causes, and prevention, the more easily you and your loved ones can avoid joining these unfortunate numbers. That’s why we’re proud to announce our “Ready. Set. Balance.” workshop series, hosted by Suzanne McCrum, our very own AIB-Certified balance expert, as she leads the group in understanding how the human body balances itself and how you can reduce your fall risk by improving your balance.
Join us for Ready. Set. Balance.

Why falls are the second leading cause of unintentional injury deaths worldwide?
Fall injuries are on the rise, worldwide, but they’re specifically prevalent in the United States for a variety of reasons, involving a combination of demographic, environmental, and behavioral factors, but here are a few of the key contributors for fall injuries:
- Poor physical coordination or weak muscles, due to a sedentary lifestyle, often result in falls.
- Damage to your vestibular system, the part of the inner ear that controls your sense of position, which causes dizziness.
- Chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis, can weaken bones, affect balance, and impair overall physical health, increasing the risk of falls.
- Medications, often taken by older adults, can cause lightheadedness, vision issues, muscle atrophy that causes leg weakness, or hypotension, which is why seniors account for 25 percent of fall injuries in the US; making fall prevention education especially important later in life.
Fortunately, you can reduce your risk of falls at any age by recognizing your risk factors and working to minimize them. For instance, if you suffer from muscular weakness, exercises can help you stabilize your body when standing and walking. If you suffer from dizzy spells, you may benefit from a change in medication or treatment for a vestibular disorder.
