As an occupational therapists, with more than 15 years of experience, and Certified Stroke Rehabilitation Specialist, Jennica Colvin works with a lot of stroke survivors.  With stroke rehabilitation, every case is special and unique to every patient’s desired occupant. Whether it is developing the strength needed to hold a baby, doing your own hair, or putting in earrings, when working with Jennica, the goal is to treat the whole person and improve their quality of life.

What is Stroke Rehabilitation

Essentially post-stroke rehabilitation is a type of occupational therapy that focuses on helping individuals who have suffered from a stroke to regain their ability to perform everyday activities, such as dressing, bathing, and cooking. Occupational therapists work with stroke patients to assess their physical, cognitive, and emotional abilities and develop personalized treatment plans to help them regain independence and improve their quality of life.

At Trio Rehab, the focus is on treating the whole person – the mind, body, and spirit.  And with stroke rehabilitation, this approach couldn’t be more essential.  Stroke patients often suffer from cognitive, physical, and emotional injury.  For Jennica, the key to a successful post-stroke rehab program is to develop therapy goals and activities that support her patients’ personal goals.

Meet Betty
Her goal is to achieve more independence.  For her, recovery looks like washing her own clothes and dishes and living a more independent lifestyle.  Every week, Jennica works with Betty to reach her specific and desired outcomes.

Ultimately, Certified Stroke Rehabilitation Specialists use a variety of techniques and exercises to help stroke patients regain strength and dexterity in their affected limbs, improve their balance and coordination, and work on cognitive skills such as memory and problem-solving.  However, by considering Betty as a whole person, not just a post-stroke rehabilitation patient needing to improve arm mobility, Jennica has created a program that addresses Betty’s mind with familiar activity repetition, her body by stretching muscles and joints, and her spirit by involving activities that she loves.
